What Are Invisalign Aligners?

Invisalign is a dental treatment that can straighten your teeth without having to use metal braces. Invisalign uses a series of clear aligners that are custom-made for your mouth. Each aligner puts slight pressure on your teeth, moving them over time.

Invisalign is an orthodontic treatment using clear, removable aligners to gradually close gaps and straighten teeth. The treatment consists of a series of aligner trays that patients wear for a minimum of two weeks at a time before switching to the next tray in the series. This continues until the treatment is complete and all teeth are properly straightened.

Each set of invisible braces is custom-made to fit the patient’s mouth based on molds of their bite. Because of these, patients don’t have to worry about the fit and feel of the aligners. In fact, these aligners are invisible when worn!

Patients wear their aligners at all times, with the exception of when eating or drinking anything other than water. Aligners are removed while eating and then placed back in after meals and drinks. Because patients remove their aligners to eat, there are no restrictions on what they can eat during the treatment process.

Get a Dazzling, Clear Smile with Invisalign

If you’re looking to straighten your teeth for a beautiful smile, Invisalign might be the answer for you. Clear aligners, or Invisalign, are a great alternative to metallic braces. Metallic braces not only interfere with daily activities such as eating and brushing your teeth, but they are also conspicuous and may make you conscious while smiling.

With Invisalign, you can achieve a smile that will boost your confidence without the hassle of traditional metal wire braces. Our dental clinic also offers other solutions relating to cosmetic dentistry in Delta, including dental veneers to help correct chips or cracks in the teeth.

What is Invisalign and How Does it Work?

Invisalign clear aligners are made of a transparent, plastic-like material. They come in a set, i.e., one for the upper jaw and one for the lower jaw, and are custom-made for each individual. Invisalign clear aligners apply small forces on teeth that are misaligned and gradually guide them into the desired position without the pain typically associated with metallic braces.

Invisalign includes a number of different aligner trays that are custom fit for your teeth. Each set of trays will be worn for a couple of weeks at a time, gradually shifting your teeth into proper alignment. Your dentist will advise you to wear them for a minimum of 20 to 22 hours every day, only removing them to eat and brush your teeth. Checkups every four to six weeks will ensure the fit is still correct and comfortable, as well as give any minor adjustments if necessary. Once the treatment is complete, you will likely need to wear a retainer at night to ensure your teeth remain in their new position.

Overall, the treatment timeline will vary from person to person, depending on your unique needs. The average patient can expect the entire process to take around a year or less.

Invisalign can help to correct:

  • Overcrowding teeth
  • Over/underbite
  • Crossbite
  • Unevenly spaced teeth

Advantages of Invisalign

NNot all cases of crowding or crooked teeth are candidates for Invisalign. To determine your eligibility, your dentist at Kennedy Heights will do a comprehensive oral examination, which will include radiographs to assess the degree of crowding. The dentist will then make impressions of your teeth in the upper and lower jaw and have the aligners designed accordingly.

Invisalign aligners need to be changed every 10-14 days. The overall treatment will last for approximately 12 months but varies depending on individual cases. Results become apparent within 2-3 months of starting the treatment.

Since the aligners are completely transparent, you will need to remove them every time you eat because food can stain them. Moreover, they should not be exposed to direct sunlight or strong chemicals which may distort them.

Bleaching/Teeth Whitening

Teeth whitening is one of the most popular treatments in cosmetic dentistry. A brighter smile can take years off your age and improve your appearance.

While many types of toothpastes in the market claim to whiten teeth, not all of them contain bleaching agents, with most containing abrasives that just remove stains from your teeth.

On the other hand, professional teeth whitening procedures utilize strong and safe bleaching agents that are activated by a specific wavelength of light. This procedure’s results are more effective and longer-lasting than over-the-counter teeth whitening agents.

At Kennedy Heights Dental, we offer tooth whitening treatments to both lighten and remove staining to restore your teeth and give you a refreshing, brighter smile. Boost your smile and your confidence: book your first teeth whitening session today at Kennedy Heights Dental Centre.

Veneers/Dental Laminates

Laminates are thin and translucent, chip-like resin restorations that can be fixed to the tooth instantly through the use of dental cement after reducing some surface enamel. This helps change your smile in a matter of a few minutes.

If you have chipped or cracked teeth, veneers offer an ideal solution for improving the appearance of your smile. Veneers also increase the strength of your teeth and can be adapted to match the colour and surface texture of the specific tooth.

At Kennedy Heights Dental, we help clients throughout British Columbia smile confidently again. We offer dental veneers in Richmond and other towns in the area to serve residents in the greater Surrey area.

For dental veneer options in Surrey, get in touch with Kennedy Heights Dental today. We can be your local dentist in Delta BC.

Inlays and Onlays

Also called indirect restorations, inlays and onlays are first fabricated outside the oral cavity by making impressions of the prepared tooth cavity and then cemented into place. Inlays lie within the confines of the cavity whereas onlays cover one or more cusps of the tooth.

Restorative Treatments

We offer a full range of filling options to bring the decay back under control and preserve as much as we can of your original tooth:

  • Silver (amalgam fillings)
  • Tooth-coloured fillings
  • Gold fillings
  • Ceramic, tooth-coloured materials

Dental Crowns and Bridges

If you have a decayed or broken tooth that needs restoration, dental crowns are a highly effective treatment option because unlike veneers, they cover the entire tooth, providing added protection and strength. Crowns help restore the integrity of the tooth while also enhancing its appearance.

Dental bridges draw support from adjacent teeth to restore missing ones. Both of them are matched to the colour of adjacent teeth to give them an all-natural look.

Searching for dental crowns near you? Call Kennedy Heights Dental Centre today. We offer dental crowns in Surrey, as well as dental crowns in Richmond and surrounding areas in Vancouver.

Invisalign

Invisalign is becoming an increasingly popular alternative to traditional metal braces. Invisalign offers greater convenience as the invisible aligners are transparent, removable, and straighten teeth quickly and effectively.

Over the years, Invisalign has become a comprehensive orthodontics solution: it fixes common orthodontic issues such as gaps, crooked teeth, overbites, and more.

Need Invisalign services in Langley? Contact Kennedy Heights Dental Centre today to book an initial consultation.

Our registered general dentists will evaluate your dental concerns to determine your treatment eligibility and answer any questions you might have. We also offer a range of finance options and work with insurance companies to make your Invisalign treatment affordable.

Dental Bonding

Dental bonding, also called "tooth bonding," is used to repair broken, chipped, cracked, and decayed teeth to bring them back to an attractive, healthy appearance. Whether you have a gap in between your front teeth or a discoloured tooth, composite resin bonding is the most affordable smile solution to these problems.

What is Dental Bonding?

Dental bonding is primarily a cosmetic procedure used to restore the aesthetics of your face and smile. It can be used to eliminate gaps between teeth, as well as fix chipped teeth. Certain dental fillings also use composite bonding for aesthetic purposes since the colour of the filling is matched exactly to that of the tooth to be filled.

Your dentist at Kennedy Heights Dental Centre can rebuild your front chipped tooth and make it like it was never chipped in the first place!

What is the Procedure for Bonding?

Dental bonding is a simple procedure that involves use of a tooth-coloured resin, which is initially plasticine--soft and moldable--but sets hard upon exposure to light of a specific wavelength.

When the tooth has been prepared, the surface is slightly roughened by the use of a gel in a process called ‘etching.’ The composite resin is then applied onto the tooth in increments and exposed to ultraviolet light--this is called ‘curing.’ Once the resin is hard, your dentist at Kennedy Heights Dental Centre will shape and polish it to give it the final finishing touches.

Anesthesia is typically not required in the majority of cases, but it may be needed if extensive restorations need to be done or if a cavity is deep.

What are the Advantages and Disadvantages of Dental Bonding?

Dental bonding has many advantages including being more cost-effective in comparison to crowns and veneers, as well as being the least invasive procedure among other tooth restoration methods since it requires minimal tooth material to be removed. Only one short appointment is required for multiple restorations, whereas crowns and veneers require a longer time for tooth preparation and an additional visit for placement.

Some disadvantages of dental bonding include easy stainability and less durability. Crowns and veneers are more stain-resistant and usually last much longer than dental bonding.

To learn more about the pros, cons, and procedure for bonding visit us at Kennedy Heights Dental Centre, where our dentists perform dental bonding procedures to give you that perfect smile. Whether you’ve been searching for dental implant offices near you or a dentist near you for wisdom teeth removal, our team can help. Contact us today.

Oral Hygiene/Cleaning

Oral hygiene and cleanings are vital to your overall health and well-being. It is the practice of keeping your teeth free from tooth decay and your other oral structures free from infection. Oral care includes regular brushing and flossing, dental exams, and cleanings at least twice a year to ensure good oral hygiene. At Kennedy Heights Dental Centre, we perform dental check-ups and cleanings to keep our patient's oral health in peak condition.

What is Oral Hygiene/Cleaning?

The term "Oral Hygiene" refers to the routine care that is done to keep your mouth healthy. This includes brushing your teeth, flossing, rinsing with mouthwash, and visiting your dentist for routine check-ups and cleanings. All of these activities help to remove bacteria and plaque from the teeth and gums. These harmful bacteria and plaque can lead to tooth decay and gum disease if not taken care of. Poor oral hygiene can also cause bad breath. Regular visits to the dentist can help prevent these problems from happening or getting worse over time.

When cleaning your teeth and gums at home, it is important to use a soft-bristled toothbrush in order to clean the surfaces of the teeth without damaging gum tissue. It is also important to brush your tongue to remove any bacteria that can cause bad breath. Flossing should be done once a day to clean in between the teeth and remove pieces of food that may get stuck between the teeth. Flossing also helps to prevent gingivitis by removing debris from below the gum line that can lead to an infection of the gums. Mouthwash should be used after brushing and flossing to help remove any additional plaque and debris that was not removed during these activities. Mouthwashes also help to reduce the bacterial count that causes bad breath.

It is best to visit your dentist at least twice a year for regular cleaning and check-up. Your dentist will take x-rays of your teeth to check for any problems that may not be visible to the naked eye, such as cavities between teeth or under existing fillings. A thorough cleaning will be done by the dentist to remove plaque and prevent plaque buildup in the future. If problems are found with your mouth during a check-up, your dentist may recommend treatment such as a filling, crown, or root canal. Additionally, if your gums are inflamed due to a bacterial infection or if a tooth is loose, you may need treatment for these issues as well.

How to Keep Up With Your Oral Care?

Regular dental visits play a vital role in maintaining oral health. They help us identify and remedy any problems with teeth or gums. Besides, we can also assess the general condition of your oral health, detect potential trouble spots, and provide the required preventive care. In between visits, follow a dedicated regime of oral hygiene routine to keep your teeth clean and disease-free, your gums healthy and pink, and your breath fresh. Your oral routine care should include the following:

Brush and Floss

It would be best if you brushed at least twice a day and flossed at least once daily. This will help eliminate plaque, a sticky bacterial film, from the surfaces of your teeth. The bacteria in plaque can convert into acids from the sugars left over in the food debris. These acids then attack the tooth's enamel resulting in cavities. Some bacteria can also be responsible for gingivitis and other severe gum diseases

Get Fluorides

Fluoride strengthens tooth enamel. It is crucial for children's developing teeth and helps prevent decay in adults and kids. Even if your tap water is fluoridated, you should always use fluoride toothpaste. If more fluoride is required, it can be applied directly to your teeth at our dental office.

Limit Sugary Snacks

Sugary snacks encourage decay-causing bacteria. When eaten in excess, the acids are constantly attacking your teeth. Hence limit your sugary treats to mealtime

Use a Mouth Rinse

Medicated mouth rinses prevent foul odor in your mouth and help improve your overall oral hygiene. They contain anti-bacterial and anti-cariogenic ingredients and prevent cavities when supplemented with efficient brushing and flossing.

Quit Tobacco

Tobacco use significantly increases your risk of gum disease, tooth decay, and oral cancer. Quitting tobacco will be beneficial for your oral and overall general health.

Teeth Cleanings

During your teeth cleaning treatment, we will meticulously scrub your teeth and gums and remove the harmful accumulations that can compromise the health of your smile. Teeth cleanings significantly reduce the need for costly treatments in the future as we can stop preventable issues like tooth decay and gum diseases from occurring in the first place. Finally, we will polish your smile to restore its shine and luster.

At Kennedy Heights Dental Centre, we provide dental solutions to improve your oral health while transforming smiles. Visit our office at 11960 88 Ave, Delta, BC V4C 3C8, Canada, or call 778.200.8556 and schedule an appointment.

Dental Restorations

A dental restoration is a procedure used to repair a damaged tooth. Restorative procedures are used to improve the appearance of a damaged tooth or to prevent tooth loss by treating an infection. Restorative dentistry is a branch of dentistry that deals with diagnosing, preventing, and treating oral diseases to restore teeth to proper function. When one or more teeth are lost, restorative dentistry can help restore both the aesthetic appearance and function of the smile. Tooth loss can occur due to periodontal disease, tooth decay, or trauma.

There are many different types of restorations available to treat tooth loss, such as dental crowns, bridges, dental implants, and more. A dentist can discuss the best option for the patient based on their needs, budget, and oral health.

kennady image

Why is it important to replace missing teeth with Dental Restorations?

Missing teeth should be replaced as soon as possible in order to help prevent the loss of other healthy teeth and to maintain the proper function of the mouth. When even one tooth is missing, the teeth surrounding the space can move or tilt into the empty space, which can cause problems with chewing and speaking. Missing teeth can also result in a change in the bite that can lead to problems with the remaining teeth. Additionally, without adequate structural support, the jawbone can slowly deteriorate over time. This can result in changes to your facial structure, such as sunken cheeks and a prematurely aged appearance.

If you are missing any teeth, it is important to visit your dentist as soon as possible to discuss treatment options. For most patients, the best treatment for their missing teeth will be fixed bridges, partial dentures, or full dentures. Fixed bridges and dentures are removable restorations, while dental implants are a permanent restoration option. To determine which treatment option is best for you, it will be determined how many teeth are missing, how much bone is present, and the condition of your gums. Feel free to contact our dental office today to schedule a consultation with us to see which treatment is the best option for you!

Who Is A General Dentist?

A general dentist is a dentist who specializes in diagnosing and treating oral health problems. These can include cavities, gum disease, cracked or broken teeth, and oral cancer. General dentists can provide restorative dental care as well as preventative care.

In addition to providing routine examinations and cleanings, general dentists also treat oral conditions like sleep apnea by fitting patients with an oral appliance that helps maintain an open airway during sleep. A general dentist can also provide relief from temporomandibular joint disorder or TMJ disorder, which is a condition that causes pain in the jaw and surrounding muscles due to poor bite alignment. Treatment for this condition can take the form of a custom mouth guard or other orthodontic devices. Other services commonly provided by general dentists include sealants to prevent cavities in children and teenagers, root canal therapy to treat infected tooth pulp, and tooth extractions. In order to become a general dentist, a person must obtain a degree in dentistry from a qualified dental school and complete several years of training under the supervision of a licensed dentist. This education includes the study of the diagnosis and treatment of common dental conditions and preventative measures such as flossing, brushing, and fluoride treatments. Once these requirements are fulfilled, the dentist must also pass a series of practical and written exams in order to become licensed to practice as a general dentist in the state where their office is located.

What Dental Issues Can General Dentistry Treat?

Periodontal Disease

Periodontal disease (commonly known as gum disease) is the primary cause of tooth loss in adults. It is almost completely preventable with regular dental visits and good oral hygiene. Regular general dentistry appointments include a deep clean of the teeth and gums to remove the buildup of plaque, which is the leading cause of gum disease..

Gum Recession

In simple terms, gum recession is when gums shift from their original position and move downwards in the lower jaw or upwards in the upper jaw, thereby exposing the tooth root. In technical terms, gum recession is attachment loss, resulting in the onset of gum disease, which can eventually lead to tooth loss. Tooth sensitivity can also become an associated chronic problem.

The following are some common factors that cause gum recession:

  • Plaque and/or calculus that deposits between gums and teeth can lead to detachment of gums and, thereby, recession
  • The habit of clenching or grinding teeth in your sleep can cause undue pressure on teeth and is detrimental to gums as it can lead to their detachment from the tooth
  • Aggressive brushing can cause gums to recede
  • In some individuals, gum recession is hereditary

Pinhole Gum Rejuvenation: A Convenient Alternative to Traditional Gum Surgery

At Kennedy Heights Dental Centre, we offer the latest, minimally invasive, and highly effective gum repositioning technique called 'pinhole gum rejuvenation.'

Pinhole gum rejuvenation is a surgical technique that involves the making of pinhole-sized punctures using specific dental instruments after the administration of local anesthesia. The gums are then stretched and lifted upwards from their original position, and the pinholes are then filled with collagen for rapid repair of gums.

Traditional surgery for gum repositioning requires grafts that are harvested from another place in the oral cavity, most commonly the palate. This graft is sutured to the receded gums and extended up to their original position. This creates a lesion at both sites, requiring sutures.

With the pinhole technique, there is no need for sutures, and thus, appointments are shorter, and recovery is more rapid. The pinhole method also enables dentists to treat multiple teeth in a single sitting. The traditional technique, on the other hand, can result in color mismatch and extensive discomfort when multiple teeth are treated in one visit. .

Tooth Decay/Cavities

Tooth decay is a gradual process that often goes unnoticed until serious damage has occurred. Dentists look for early signs of tooth decay at regular checkup appointments and quickly address any oral problems to protect your teeth.

Some decay issues may be minor and may only require a small filling, while others may be more extensive. If there is significant tooth decay, root canals, crowns, or dental implants may become necessary.

Kennedy Heights Dental offers a full range of services and options, including dental implants, to Richmond and residents in Greater Vancouver.

Teeth Sensitivity

Do you avoid hot drinks or ice-cold beverages because they cause pain or discomfort?

Tooth sensitivity is a sign of an underlying problem, such as a cavity, a cracked tooth, or a worn-out filling. To prevent tooth sensitivity from becoming a bigger problem, visit your dentist as soon as you can.

Dull Smile

Is your smile not as bright as it used to be?

As you age, tooth enamel wears down, leaving teeth exposed to damage. In particular, certain lifestyle habits such as smoking or drinking coffee, black tea, red wine, or sodas can stain and cause damage to teeth, leading to tooth discoloration.

The good news is that we can help restore your teeth to their previous, natural glory with our tooth whitening services.

Another popular option for improving the look of your smile is porcelain veneers. Kennedy Heights Dental is proud to offer exceptional dental veneers to Langley and Greater Vancouver residents.

Root Canal Treatment

If you are experiencing sharp pains in your teeth, don't hesitate to call us at Kennedy Heights Dental at (778) 200-8556 Don't let misplaced fear of pain dissuade you from getting a root canal. It can save your tooth and help reduce the risk of extraction down the road.

Root Canals: What You Need to Know

A root canal treatment is not always as complicated a procedure as you may have been led to believe. Although it may require several dental appointments, the dentists at Kennedy Heights Dental Centre make sure that the procedure is performed smoothly and seamlessly.

When do you need a root canal?

When carbohydrate-containing food particles get lodged into tooth spaces, they undergo bacterial decomposition. In other words, oral bacteria release acids to digest the food particles for their use. These acids dissolve the calcium of the tooth surface; this can cause cavities, which, if they become deep enough, can eventually reach the tooth nerve and blood supply that are housed in the deepest parts of a tooth.

If the nerves of a tooth are exposed, it causes excruciating pain and discomfort. This is when you will typically need a root canal. In some cases, an intentional root canal may be performed. For example, when the tooth crown has worn off and if your dentist feels that placing a crown on that tooth will expose the nerves, they may perform an intentional root canal and then cap the tooth.

What is the procedure for a root canal?

It typically takes one to two dental appointments for a root canal treatment.

Your dentist at Kennedy Heights Dental Centre will first prepare an access cavity to gain access to the root canals. The root canals are then cleaned of bacterial contamination and prepared to receive an inert and radiopaque restorative material. The material is placed into the root canals, and the canals are then sealed, after which the access cavity is filled with composite material, and the tooth is reduced in size to accommodate a dental crown over it.

How long does the procedure take?

It may take anywhere between one to three appointments for a root canal treatment since the severity of the bacterial infection decides the duration of the treatment. Unless the tooth is severely infected, a one-time appointment will usually suffice.

Is it painful?

A root canal can be performed under local anesthesia, general anesthesia, or conscious sedation, depending on what you prefer. You will not feel pain during the procedure itself but may require pain relief medication afterward, as advised by your dentist.

Wisdom Teeth Removal

On the hunt for a wisdom teeth dentist near you?

It's advisable to avoid waiting too long to remove your wisdom teeth, as avoiding it may lead to tooth impaction and pain. If left untreated, impacted wisdom teeth can lead to many problems, such as infection and decay of surrounding teeth and gums. If you choose to have wisdom teeth removal at our Surrey office, you will be in excellent hands.

Serving the Greater Vancouver area, we provide wisdom teeth removal for Richmond and residents of surrounding areas.

What is a wisdom tooth?

Wisdom teeth are the third set of molars that erupt between the ages of 17 and 25. There are a total of four wisdom teeth: two in the upper jaw and two in the lower jaw.

When and why do you need to get your wisdom tooth extracted?

Wisdom teeth rarely erupt at the correct position and on time. In the majority of individuals, they get impacted, i.e., change the direction of eruption, becoming trapped in the jaw bone. It becomes mandatory to remove them before they pose a problem.

Because wisdom teeth may erupt at an abnormal angle, they can push against other teeth, causing damage to them. Wisdom teeth are also prone to dental cavities or periodontal disease since they are hard to reach because of their location, being furthest back in your mouth. These factors warrant their swift and timely removal.

At Kennedy Heights Dental Centre, we have a team of dental surgeons who specialize in impacted wisdom tooth extractions. We make the surgical process as smooth as possible and assist you in having a quick recovery.

What Is The Procedure For A Wisdom Tooth Extraction?

Wisdom tooth extraction is a surgical procedure that involves the administration of either local or general anesthesia, depending upon your preference.

The dental surgeon first incises the gums to remove the bony cover, using bone burs. Once the wisdom tooth is exposed, the dentist will divide it into fragments and remove it. The gums are then sutured over the bone, and a cotton pack is placed over the site. You will have to follow the instructions of your dentist diligently to prevent any postoperative complications.

Is it very painful?

Since the surgery is performed under anesthesia, the procedure is painless, but when the anesthesia wears off, some pain and discomfort are normal. Your dentist at Kennedy Heights will prescribe medication that will help relieve the discomfort.

How much time does it take to recover from the surgery?

The first three days after surgery are crucial, and every instruction of the dentist should be followed word-for-word during this time. While it takes a week to fully recover from the surgery, it may take longer, depending on how complicated the surgery is.

Pediatric Dentistry

Good oral habits should start early. The dentists at Kennedy Heights Dental Centre will ensure that your children's pearly whites stay healthy, shiny, and cavity-free throughout their childhood.

Why Do Kids Need to See a Dentist?

It is a common misconception that milk teeth, or baby teeth, don't need as much care as adult teeth. In reality, cavities in milk teeth can decrease the size of the dental arch, leading to crowding of permanent teeth or crooked teeth (because they are larger and need more space to erupt), and may also cause discoloration.

The dentists at Kennedy Heights Dental Centre will ensure timely intervention and prevent these problems from occurring.

At What Age Should Your Child See a Dentist?

According to the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD), your child's first dental visit should be within six months of their first tooth coming in or by the age of one (whichever is earlier). This will ensure that positive oral habits are developed instead of harmful ones, such as thumb sucking or pacifier misuse.

What We Do in Pediatric Dentistry

  • Comprehensive oral examination for infants and toddlers: cleanings, x-rays, cavity fillings, and fluoride treatment to prevent cavities or tooth decay
  • Teaching proper toothbrushing techniques
  • Preventing crowding of teeth using metal-free braces and managing dental arch space using space maintainers
  • Guiding development of upper and lower jaws using headgear to prevent malocclusion or misalignment of jaws
  • Monitoring and eliminating harmful oral habits such as thumb sucking, tongue thrusting, or mouth breathing through the use of custom-made dental appliances

Dental fear can be set into the minds of children at a very young age. Regular dental visits help eliminate such fears and go a long way in maintaining good oral hygiene in both children and adults.

Preventative Dentistry

At Kennedy Heights Dental, we believe prevention is the best way to protect your oral health. A visit to your dentist at Kennedy Heights Dental Centre to get a thorough checkup is your best first step for a preventative oral treatment plan.

Prevention is better

Growing research has shown that oral health is directly connected to overall health. For example, gum disease in pregnant women can lead to low birth weight, as well as premature delivery. Poor oral health can also lead to heart disease and exacerbates the diabetic condition, leading to the fluctuation in blood sugar levels. It is imperative to take your oral health seriously.

What is preventive dentistry?

Preventive dentistry covers all aspects of oral disease prevention and encompasses any and all forms of dental care, such as teeth cleaning, education about brushing techniques, cavity fillings, and preventing erosion of enamel.

What does preventive dentistry include?

The following are some highly recommended practices in preventive dentistry to maintain optimal oral health:

  • Brushing should follow the practice of 'two,' i.e., brushing for two minutes two times daily. This will regularly remove plaque from your teeth and prevent cavities.
  • Replace your toothbrush every 2-3 months, and don't forget to clean your tongue.
  • Flossing is as important as brushing since it cleans the tight spaces between your teeth as well as the gum line, removing plaque to prevent periodontal diseases. Flossing is especially important if you have braces.
  • Regular dental checkups involve assessments of your oral health and chalking out a treatment plan for the prevention of oral diseases. Regular checkups include teeth cleaning through scaling and having any cavities filled to prevent damage to the nerve and blood supply of the tooth.
  • Balanced dietary intake that involves avoiding high amounts of sugar in the diet is important. Also, opt for high-fibre food items to help keep your teeth and gums healthy.

Dental Emergency

If you need treatment for a dental emergency in Richmond, Delta, or surrounding areas in Vancouver, contact Kennedy Heights dental today. Our team of highly-trained dental professionals is ready to assist. Look no further for an emergency dental clinic near you.

Is it an Emergency?

A dental emergency is a situation that poses an immediate risk to dental and other tissues or even your overall health and requires urgent treatment. The most common dental emergency that we at Kennedy Heights Dental Centre encounter is pain, often accompanied by intraoral or extraoral swelling.

Types Of Dental Emergencies

Come see us at Kennedy Heights Dental Centre if you are experiencing one or more of the following issues:

  • Excruciating pain in one or more teeth
  • Swelling (painless or painful) inside or outside your mouth
  • Difficulty breathing or swallowing
  • Painful and/or bleeding gums
  • Avulsed tooth, i.e. a tooth that has come out of its socket due to trauma to the jaw bone
  • Cracked tooth due to trauma
  • Dislodged tooth filling
  • Trauma to the facial bones
  • Loose or lost orthodontic wires, brackets or elastics

What Should You Do in the Case of a Dental Emergency?

Although a dental emergency is not something you should handle yourself, you can use over-the-counter analgesics, such as aspirin, for temporary pain relief as you make plans to visit a dentist. Home remedies, such as the application of clove oil at the site of the toothache, can also help relieve pain.

For an avulsed tooth, you should keep the dislodged tooth in milk or potable water without trying to scrub it clean. Although it is advisable to keep the avulsed tooth in your mouth (under the tongue), for children, there are chances of choking, and therefore it should be stored in water or milk. The chance of survival of the dislodged tooth depends on the time it takes to reach the dental clinic, so it is best if it arrives within the hour.

For swelling inside or outside of your oral cavity, it is advisable to apply a cold compress on the area. Never apply a hot pack since it will increase the chances of the spread of infection to other areas.

For a displaced restoration, crown, or bridge, make sure that you don't swallow it to avoid choking on it. You should place sugar-free chewing gum into the cavity to avoid contamination by oral bacteria. See your dentist immediately to get the tooth re-restored and also to get the dislodged crown or bridge cemented into place.

For any kind of dental emergency, our dentists in Delta and surrounding areas are ready to handle any kind of urgent oral problem. From wisdom teeth removal in Richmond to chipped tooth repair in Delta, Kennedy Heights Dental can treat your problem quickly and efficiently.

Dental implants are one of our core services. If you’re considering this service, please view the details below or call us to book your appointment today.

What Is A Dental Implant?

Dental implants are artificial tooth roots that provide a permanent base for fixed or removable replacement teeth. This treatment is considered the gold standard for tooth replacement.

A dental implant is a synthetic tooth root that is placed into your jaw to hold a replacement tooth or bridge in place. Dental implants are made of three components – the titanium implant that fuses to your jawbone, an abutment that sits on top of the implant and holds the replacement tooth in place, and the prosthetic crown. The custom restoration is matched to your natural teeth in terms of shape, size, and color to ensure a seamless smile after tooth loss.

Dental implants can be used to replace a single missing tooth, multiple missing teeth in a row, or even all of your teeth in both the upper and lower arches. They are the only restorative treatment that provides stable support for your new smile and prevent the jawbone from deteriorating over time.

The Benefits of Dental Implants

At Kennedy Heights Dental, our dental services in Richmond include dental implants--replacing the root of any missing teeth. If you are looking for dental implant offices near you, we’re a great choice. So, let’s explore the benefits of dental implants and when they might be necessary.

The natural tooth structure consists of a root (which holds the tooth securely below the gum) and a crown (the top portion of the tooth that is visible and used to chew food). A dental implant also consists of a root and crown constructed with titanium, an extremely durable and non-degradable metal used in many surgical procedures.

Due to titanium’s inherent strength and structural likeness to real teeth, dental implants offer a long-term solution to replacing a broken or missing tooth. Implants can be tailored to match the colour and tone of your surrounding teeth, so you won’t even notice they’re there.

At Kennedy Heights Dental Centre, we treat patients from all over the Greater Vancouver area. Whether you are looking for dental implants in Langley, Richmond, or Delta, we’ve got you covered. Contact us to find out if our dental implant procedures are right for you.

Dental Implant Procedure

Dental implants used to support crowns, bridges, or even dentures are done by our dentists in-office (most of the time). Once the root/implant portion is stabilized, a crown can be placed on top of the implant, acting like a normal tooth.

When you book a dental implant consultation with us, one of our friendly dentists in South Surrey will go through the procedure in detail and answer any questions or concerns you may have. With us, you know you’re going to be given the best care.

A dental implant is a small titanium or zirconium post which is surgically placed in the jawbone beneath the gums. Titanium and Zirconium are both biocompatible metals that fuse with the bone to create a secure foundation for the restoration that follows. The implant allows your dentist to attach an artificial tooth to the post and restore your smile to its natural function and beauty.

The implant procedure is usually completed in two phases. First, the implant is placed into the jawbone below the gum line. During the second phase of the treatment process, known as osseointegration, the bone fuses around the surface of the implant through a process called cellular adhesion. This healing process typically takes about three months to complete. Once the jaw has fully healed, a permanent restoration can be placed on the implant.

How Long Can Dental Implants Last?

Dental implants can last for many years and even a lifetime if they are properly cared for. The lifespan of these restorations depends on a few factors. These include the type of implant, the patient’s dental health habits, and the health of the jawbone. For example, implants placed below the gum line have a reduced lifespan than those that are placed above. This is because the bone tends to resorb more quickly in the lower jaw than in the higher one. However, with proper oral hygiene and regular checkups and cleanings, your dental implant can last decades!

While dental implants are a great way to restore your smile, they are not for everyone. It’s important that you consult with your dentist to see if they’re the right treatment for you!

Dental Crowns Near You

If you are looking to restore a damaged tooth, a crown might be a simpler and more convenient solution over implants. Instead of replacing the entire tooth — as is the case with dental implants — a crown is just a replacement for the visible part of the tooth.

Crowns, also known as ‘caps,’ are fixed to the top of the existing tooth, restoring its original shape, colour, and function. Dental crowns are a more affordable alternative to dental implants and are much less invasive. We offer high-quality dental crowns that can last anywhere between 5 and 15 years.

Teeth Whitening

A smile full of imperfections can make you feel self-conscious when you grin, speak and laugh. At Kennedy Heights Dental Centre, we offer teeth whitening treatments to give you a sparkling bright smile. We address discolored stained teeth with dental-grade products that deliver beautiful results. A simple whitening procedure can change your life.

How Teeth Become Stained

Teeth can become stained for a number of different reasons, but the most common cause is plaque buildup. When oral bacteria are allowed to build up on the teeth and around your gums, it can leave noticeable yellowing and discoloration in their wake.

Other causes of tooth discoloration include:
  • Smoking and eating certain foods or beverages that stain teeth
  • Certain medications and medical treatments that have side effects that include tooth discoloration
  • Acidic drinks like soda can erode your enamel and leave your teeth less resistant to staining agents
  • Tooth injuries can lead to increased tooth sensitivity and eventually to discolorations

Professional teeth whitening is a great way to rid your smile of unsightly stains. Your dentist will be able to determine the cause of your discoloration and recommend the appropriate treatment to get rid of it for good.

Why Choose Professional Teeth Whitening?

With so many drug-store teeth whitening options available, many patients consider brightening their teeth at home. The primary difference between store products and professional whitening systems are safety and results. Our dentists provide brilliant results, often in just one office visit. We use customized trays that safeguard your gums from sensitivity and harsh bleaching solutions. In addition, it should be kept in mind that some store whitening products like rubber tooth polishes and charcoal toothpaste can end up damaging your tooth enamel. For the best whitening results, opt for professional teeth whitening treatments.

The Benefits of a Whiter Smile

  • Staining and yellowing are natural signs of aging, and a white smile will make you look younger and healthier.
  • You will feel less self-conscious when you smile and laugh as you don’t have to worry about unappealing stains
  • Teeth whitening is economical, completely non-invasive, and offers remarkable results in as little as one appointment.

Teeth Whitening Options at Kennedy Heights Dental Centre

In-Office Teeth Whitening

Our in-office teeth whitening treatments can provide you with a smile that’s up to eight to ten shades whiter in just a single appointment. After your teeth have been cleaned, our dentist will apply a powerful, hydrogen peroxide-based whitening agent to your enamel. Then, this bleaching agent will be activated by unique laser light, stimulating its whitening power. This application may be repeated several times based on factors like the sensitivity of your teeth and the desired brightness. The whole process will take less than an hour, and you will leave our office with a glowing confident smile.

First, the dental team will review your medical history to make sure you are a healthy candidate for whitening treatment. Next, they will protect your gums and lips before applying the bleaching agent. Then, the dentist will apply the bleaching solution containing hydrogen peroxide to your teeth. After a specified time, the bleaching solution will be removed and reapplied until the desired level of whiteness is achieved. Once your teeth have reached their optimal level of brightness, you may be instructed to avoid certain foods and drinks that can stain teeth.

Visiting the dentist every six months can also help maintain great results. The dentist will carefully examine your teeth for signs of new decay as well as check your current veneers or other restoration to make sure they are still in good shape. Regular cleanings are also recommended to remove plaque buildup. This can help prevent tooth decay and ensure good oral health throughout your life.

Take-Home Teeth Whitening

We also offer take-home teeth whitening trays for a more gradual and relaxed treatment. If you select this convenient option, our dentist will provide a custom-fabricated whitening tray and professional-grade whitening products that allow you to brighten your smile in the comfort of your home. This is an ideal therapy for patients who want a more natural whitening process and prefer not to spend time in the dental chair.

How to Maintain Your Whitened Smile?

  • Make sure that you brush at least twice a day for two minutes and floss once a day.
  • You should also stop using tobacco products
  • Reduce your intake of staining beverages like cola, tea, coffee, and wine.
  • Opt for occasional touch-ups once every two years.

iTero Scanner

At Kennedy Heights Dental Centre, we always strive to stay ahead when it comes to dental technology. We always invest in the most advanced technology and cutting-edge tools to support the dental care we offer to create a comfortable and safe dental experience for our patients. One such state-of-the-art tool we use is the iTero Element 5D Plus scanner.

What is an iTero Scanner?

An iTero intraoral scanner scans the patients' mouths and captures highly detailed, precise images to create 3D dental scans in a few minutes.

iTero scanner can play a major role in helping dentists during procedures like placement of dental crowns, Invisalign treatment, and other treatments where getting the exact dimension of the teeth is important.

What is an iTero Scanner?

An iTero Scanner is a state-of-the-art digital impression system that eliminates the need for traditional putty impressions. It makes taking a dental impression so much easier and far more comfortable for you!

The best part about an iTero Scanner is that it only takes a few minutes to get the perfect, high-quality 3D scan of your teeth and gums. Your scan will be sent directly to our lab, where we will create your dental crown or bridge. This means no more waiting for your restoration to be made; you'll get it sooner and start enjoying your new smile even faster!

Our iTero scanner can create incredibly accurate scans of your teeth. It uses HD photography to capture the surface of your teeth in high resolution, allowing for precise imaging and analysis. It also uses blue wavelength light technology to show a clear contrast between gum tissue and other oral tissues. As a result, you'll only need to sit still for about 15 seconds per arch to get the perfect scan!

What Are The Uses of the iTero Scanner?

I-Tero technology is an intraoral optical scanning system that digitally captures the contours of the teeth and gums using the latest in 3-D imaging technology. The system uses a small handheld wand that scans the mouth with harmless laser light, resulting in a highly accurate digital impression of the teeth and soft tissue structures. The system can be used for any dental procedure that requires an impression or scan of the teeth and mouth, such as Invisalign treatment, dental crowns, bridges, periodontal therapy, and more!

  • The i-Tero system allows dentists to instantly send patients' impressions to the lab while the patient is still in the office so their custom restorations can be fabricated quickly for a comfortable and convenient experience.
  • Since the 3-D images captured by the i-Tero Impression System allow for greater accuracy when preparing restorations, patients are able to receive better-fitting restorations that will last much longer. These accurate restorations are also aesthetically pleasing and beautiful, which can boost patient confidence.
  • The i-Tero system provides enhanced comfort for patients as well by allowing your dentist to precisely capture all aspects of the teeth and surrounding oral structures without any messy and uncomfortable putty materials or having to rely on unpleasant-tasting impression pastes. In addition to not having to deal with these unpleasant materials, the entire impression process is completed within just a few minutes. Due to its speed and convenience, the digital impression system is a great treatment option for any patients with a sensitive gag reflex as well as those who are especially fearful of taking physical impressions.

Itero 5D plus

Itero 5D plus, the latest addition to the iTero Scanner series, includes new solutions that cater to a wider range of the dental market. Itero 5D plus offers all the existing orthodontic and restorative digital capabilities of the iTero scanner, along with faster processing time and cutting-edge visualization capabilities for an easy and best-quality scanning experience.

The iTero 5D Plus offers restorative and orthodontic digital workflows with the following benefits:

  • Improved visualization for providing optimized patient experience, offering more brightness to have clearer and more explicit images, along with a fully integrated three-dimensional intraoral camera.
  • Helps in faster and more seamless scanning, lessening the waiting time for scans to process by almost 20 percent.
  • Includes future AI-based elements.
  • Includes NIRI (near-infrared imaging) technology, which is used to scan the teeth's internal structure to detect interproximal (between the teeth) caries.
  • Helps dentists make a comparison of how the patient's teeth have transformed over time with the help of real-time TimeLapse technology.
  • Developed with more precise and detailed visualization and broader viewing angles that will help the dentist in treatment plan discussions.
  • Consist of an intraoral camera that helps in easy scanning of the oral cavity that is otherwise challenging to examine.
  • Kennedy Heights Dental Centre is always committed to offering the highest quality, least invasive dental care to our patients. The dental scans using the cutting-edge technology iTero 5D Plus allow us to do the same.

Dentures

Your teeth have a critical role to play in your mouth. Suffering tooth loss can considerably impact all aspects of your oral function. With missing teeth, eating becomes more challenging, causing your nutrition to suffer. Your speech can become jumbled and incoherent. Your smile gets affected, making you feel self-conscious. Missing teeth need to be replaced at the earliest. At Kennedy Heights Dental Centre, we can replace your missing teeth with dentures and partials.

Causes of Tooth Loss

The chief cause of tooth loss is gum or periodontal disease. When plaque and bacteria accumulations irritate your gums, they cause inflammation. Without treatment, your teeth become loose and fall out. Other reasons for tooth loss include facial trauma, severe tooth decay that cannot be fixed with fillings or crowns, or bruxism, a condition that wears down the enamel structures.

What Are Dentures?

Dentures are conventional treatments for tooth loss. The most standard dentures are complete dentures that replace an entire arch of missing teeth. Dentures are removable appliances that consist of artificial teeth mounted onto a pink plastic base. Modern dentures use acrylic resin teeth and a gum-colored acrylic base. The latest advancements in dental technology have significantly improved the quality of traditional dentures, making them lighter while simultaneously looking much more natural. The base is designed to sit solely on your gums, which provides your restoration with the support it needs to function efficiently.

Your dentures are constructed from impressions of your mouth. These impressions are captured after any necessary tooth extractions are performed. The impressions are then sent to our dental laboratory, where the dentures are fabricated and made ready for use. Before you leave our office with your new dentures, we check to make sure that they fit correctly, your bite is good, and that they are comfortable. If no adjustments are required, you can start wearing your dentures and get a beautiful, healthy new smile.

What Are Partial Dentures?

Partial dentures are removable dental appliances that replace missing teeth. A partial denture restores your smile by filling the gaps in your teeth. Partial dentures look and function the same as your natural teeth. They allow you to speak and eat normally.

Bridges are a good option when a patient is missing one tooth or a few teeth in a row, and the teeth on either side are healthy and free from decay. They must be well cared for in order to last for many years. In addition to brushing twice a day and flossing at least once daily, bridges need to be checked every six months to ensure there is no tooth decay around them.

Are partial dentures a good treatment option?

Partial dentures offer patients several benefits, including the ability to keep remaining teeth in better condition, enhance a patient’s appearance, and improve chewing and speech habits. When teeth are lost, the jawbone in that area of the mouth is no longer stimulated to keep it strong and healthy, so bone deterioration can occur as a result. A denture can help preserve the health of the jaw by providing it with the stimulation it needs to stay healthy and strong. Additionally, since some natural teeth are still in place, a partial denture can reduce the likelihood of other teeth shifting out of position, which is a common problem for patients that wear full dentures. Finally, if patients are only missing a few teeth, rather than an entire arch of teeth, a partial denture can often be more affordable than other options, such as a dental implant-supported restoration.

Replacing Sections with Partial Dentures

If you are missing a portion of teeth, but all of the rest of the teeth in the arch are healthy, you may be recommended a partial denture. They are similar in design to a complete denture and allow for your healthy teeth to remain in their positions, avoiding the need for unnecessary extractions. However, partial dentures do have one other difference, along with only replacing a section of teeth. These dentures have metal clasps that attach to your healthy teeth for additional support.

Benefits of Dentures and Partials

  • They reinstate your ability to eat and speak properly
  • Your digestion and nutrition are improved
  • Your smile and confidence are restored
  • Partial dentures help hold your healthy teeth in proper alignment by preventing their movement.

To learn more about our denture options, visit our office, Kennedy Heights Dental Centre, at 11960 88 Ave, Delta, BC V4C 3C8, Canada. You can also reach us at 778.200.8556 and schedule an appointment.

Dental Emergencies

Any dental problem that needs immediate medical help to stop bleeding, relieve severe pain, or save a tooth is considered an emergency. These things can occur due to tooth decay, accidents, broken restorations, facial trauma, a cavity that has reached the nerve, and more. Dental emergencies can also be applied to severe infections that can be life-threatening. At Kennedy Heights Dental Centre, we provide same-day emergency care to help our patients overcome their distressing oral concerns and gain immediate relief.

What Is A Dental Emergency?

A dental emergency is any oral condition that is causing you pain, discomfort, or affecting your quality of life. Emergencies are the worst experiences that many people may have experienced. They are often accompanied by sharp pain, sensitivity to hot or cold, bad breath, etc., and need immediate attention from the dentist.

Why Do You Need Emergency Care?

Emergency care can save your natural teeth, prevent an infection from spreading to the rest of your body, and more. For instance, if your tooth got knocked out in an accident, it may be possible to fix it, but within a short period. If your natural tooth is preserved, you can avoid expensive and painful procedures. You should seek emergency dental care if you experience the following:

  • Toothache that makes it difficult to eat or sleep
  • Knocked-out teeth
  • Broken or loose braces
  • Chipped, cracked, or broken teeth
  • Lost filling or crown
  • Abscess or pimple on the gumline

What to Do In Emergency Situations?

Toothache

A toothache that won’t go away can be a sign of a more severe problem, such as an infection or considerable damage. If your pain continues for more than a few days, you should schedule an emergency appointment right away. Before your visit, you should, from time to time, rinse the area of your toothache with warm water and apply an ice pack to your cheek to manage pain and swelling.

Knocked-Out Teeth

A tooth knocked out requires emergency dental care. Before seeking professional help, you should hold your tooth by the crown and rinse the root with water to stop bleeding. Be careful not to remove tissue that may help reattach the tooth later. If the tooth has already been detached from the tissue, place it in a container with milk, and bring it to our office, preferably within an hour of the incident.

Broken Wires and Braces

If the wire on your braces has broken or popped out of its bracket, adjust it until it’s in a comfortable position. Be careful not to damage the wire, as it could become a choking hazard. If you cannot adjust the wire back, use cotton to cover the wire and call for an emergency dental appointment. We will fix any broken or loose wires on your braces promptly.

Abscess

An abscess is an infection that appears near the root of a tooth or between the teeth and gums. If an abscess is not treated promptly, it might spread beyond the mouth to other parts of the body. Though a saltwater solution can relieve some pain, we strongly recommend visiting our office immediately to prevent complications.

How to prevent a dental emergency?

The best way to prevent a dental emergency is to practice good oral hygiene habits. Oftentimes, poor dental hygiene leads to tooth decay and gum disease. Both of these conditions can cause you pain if you don’t receive treatment as soon as possible. So, make sure you visit your dentist regularly for checkups and cleanings. Also, be sure to brush your teeth at least twice a day and floss daily. Brushing and flossing your teeth removes plaque buildup from your teeth and prevents them from hardening onto your teeth and causing decay. After brushing and flossing, use an antiseptic mouthwash to kill any lingering bacteria and improve your breath.

You can also prevent a dental emergency by wearing a mouthguard when you play sports or engage in activities that could cause injury to your jaw. A mouthguard will keep your teeth and jaw safe during these activities. Lastly, make sure to use scissors and not your teeth to open packages, such as plastic packaging around a new toothbrush. Using scissors over your teeth can lead to chipped or broken teeth. To learn more ways to prevent dental emergencies, speak with your dental care provider at your next appointment.

If you experience a dental emergency, such as a knocked-out tooth, broken tooth, or severe toothache, then contact your dentist right away. If you ignore a dental emergency or try to self-medicate your pain at home, your symptoms could worsen and become permanent. Luckily, if treated quickly, most dental emergencies are temporary and can be corrected with restorative dentistry treatments.

In case of a dental emergency, walk into our Kennedy Heights Dental Centre office at 11960 88 Ave, Delta, BC V4C 3C8. You can also reach us at 778.200.8556.

Orthodontics

Orthodontic treatments are about more than just gorgeous smiles. It encompasses the correction of a poor bite, repositions misaligned jaws, reduces overcrowding, and straightens crooked teeth, maximizing your overall oral health. People who have received orthodontic care will have fewer problems with decay, less incidence of TMJ dysfunction, and even better function. At Kennedy Heights Dental Centre, we can help you achieve a beautiful and healthy smile with our orthodontic treatments. It can benefit patients of all ages.

What Problems Do Orthodontic Treatments Fix?

Orthodontic treatments are used to treat a variety of orthodontic issues, including crooked or overcrowded teeth, and jaws that are out of alignment. Metal and ceramic braces straighten your smile by gently repositioning your teeth using wires and brackets that apply a consistent force to slowly move your teeth into proper alignment.

Many patients choose to wear braces in adolescence because their jaws are still growing. This allows the orthodontist to correct bite misalignments before they become permanent. However, adults can also benefit from orthodontic treatment with braces. In fact, advances in technology have made braces more comfortable than ever for adult patients. Just ask your dentist if you have questions about braces and how they can help you!

Orthodontics for Young Children

It is untrue that braces and orthodontic work are specifically intended for older children or teens. The ideal age to begin orthodontic treatments is at the age of seven when their bones are still growing. Orthodontic treatments in young children are known as interceptive orthodontics. It may not necessarily involve braces, but specific interventions can be made to better assist your child in having a healthier bite.

Early Orthodontic Intervention

Orthodontic treatment at a younger age can help dental professionals rectify alignment issues in your child. We can encourage healthier tooth development as permanent teeth erupt. We can:

  • Guide permanent teeth into an ideal position as they begin to emerge.
  • Make space for permanent teeth by extracting baby teeth and placing a spacer.
  • Create space in the mouth arch for permanent teeth using a palatal expander device.
  • This will expand the child’s top dental arch.

Orthodontics for Older Children and Teens

By the time your child is a teen, most of their permanent teeth have emerged. This is when a majority of parents consider having braces treatments. There are several benefits to orthodontic procedures for your teens, including:

  • Shift teeth that are crooked, overcrowded, or poorly positioned.
  • Improve your child’s bite. Malocclusions can increase tooth wear, joint problems and even conceal decay.
  • Enhance your teen’s self-confidence. Research has shown that poor bites cause social anxiety in patients. From hiding their smile to feeling embarrassed, teens care about their appearance.

Orthodontic Treatments

Our dentist will assess your bite and make the appropriate treatment recommendations. We offer traditional braces, ceramic braces, and clear Invisalign aligners. You can decide on any of the above-mentioned orthodontic treatments based on your needs and preferences.

Traditional Braces

Traditional metal braces employ wires and brackets to give you an aligned smile. They work to move your teeth into the desired orthodontic positions gradually. The metal braces may appear unattractive, but they can correct complicated misalignment issues.

Invisalign®

The Invisalign® system comprises clear plastic aligners that are custom-fabricated for your teeth. The transparent aligners give a discreet appearance while undergoing treatment, and it is especially beneficial for people conscious of their looks.

Benefits of Straightening Teeth With Braces

There are many reasons to consider getting your teeth straightened through orthodontic treatments. Here are just a few for you to think about!

Appearance and self-esteem – Straight teeth are easier to clean, making them less likely to develop cavities or gum disease. In addition, when your teeth are straight, they look nicer when you smile, which can help boost your confidence.

Better oral health – When your teeth are straighter, they’re easier to brush and floss than crooked or crowded teeth. This can help prevent tooth sensitivity, tooth decay, and gum disease.

Easier chewing – If your teeth are crooked or overlap, it’s more difficult to chew your food properly. This can lead to problems with digestion and nutrient absorption.

Speech improvement – If your teeth overlap or are out of alignment, you may struggle with certain speech sounds. Misaligned teeth may also cause you to bite your tongue more often, which can contribute to chronic bad breath.

Reduced wear on teeth – Crooked or overlapping teeth are more susceptible to damage, including chips and cracks than normal teeth. Straight teeth experience less wear over time, which can help you avoid costly repairs down the road.

Less stress on the jaw joints – Teeth that are misaligned can place excessive stress on one or both of the TMJ jaw joints. Straightening the teeth can reduce this stress, potentially reducing your risk for TMD.

Improved bite function – When the teeth don’t fit together correctly, it can lead to issues with biting and chewing food. Orthodontic treatment can help correct these problems to improve your ability to chew.

Am I Eligible For Braces?

Orthodontic treatment can help correct the alignment of your teeth and bite, as well as fix any functional problems with your jaws. Braces and other types of orthodontic appliances can straighten the teeth, close gaps, correct overbites or underbites, and address an improper or misaligned jaw. In some cases, orthodontic treatment can even help with speech impediments caused by misaligned teeth. However, not everyone benefits from orthodontic treatment. To understand whether you’re a candidate for braces or other orthodontia treatments, schedule a consultation at the dental office. During your visit, the dentist will examine your mouth and may conduct x-rays to get a better idea of your oral health. If your dentist determines you can benefit from orthodontic treatment and you elect to receive it, you’ll need to commit to regular oral hygiene at home and visit the dentist regularly for cleanings and checkups during orthodontic treatment. The dentist may also recommend other treatments alongside orthodontics, such as teeth whitening or fluoride applications, to help complete the smile makeover process.

Endodontics

Your teeth are solid and reliable tools that perform your everyday oral functions while giving you a beautiful smile. Though your teeth are concrete structures, they are still vulnerable to decay from plaque and bacteria, and physical damage.

When your teeth become compromised, it can weaken the structural integrity of your teeth and allow bacteria to penetrate the inner layers. Once this happens, a tooth infection can set in and, if not treated, can lead to severe health problems.

At Kennedy Heights Dental Centre, it is possible to save an infected tooth from extraction, eliminating the need for restorations and preventing further damage through root canal therapy.

kennady image

What Causes Root Canal Infection?

The enamel of your tooth is hard but not impenetrable. The dentin layer beneath your tooth's enamel consists of hollow canals leading to your tooth's roots. The most exposed layers are the pulp chamber and the dental pulp. The pulp is the soft, living tissue inside a tooth containing blood vessels, soft tissues, and nerves.

When your teeth suffer damage that penetrates the enamel and reaches the dentin layer, bacteria can enter the inside layers of the teeth. Once bacteria reach your tooth's canals, they begin destroying the pulp. The tissue becomes inflamed and irritated, which can then cause significant pain.

Eventually, bacteria can spread to the tooth's root, leading to an abscess. It is a painful pocket of pus that forms to contain the bacteria. If not treated, the abscess grows more prominent and can even rupture. When this happens, it allows bacteria into the bloodstream, leading to inflammation of the blood vessels and severe health complications.

Symptoms of a Root Canal Infection

When bacteria enter the pulp and cause inflammation, it can cause severe toothache. While pain is the most common indication of an infection, there are several other symptoms like the following:

  • Swelling in the jaw near the affected tooth
  • A chronic bad taste in your mouth
  • Lingering pain and sensitivity
  • Loss of bone mass in the jawbone
  • An abscess on the gums

The Root Canal Procedure

An endodontist is a dentist who specializes in saving teeth that are badly decayed, infected, or injured. Also known as "root canal" therapy, this is the most common type of endodontic treatment and involves removing the pulp from the inside of the tooth to prevent further infection and decay. The empty inside of the tooth is then disinfected before it is sealed. Endodontic treatments save millions of teeth each year, allowing patients to maintain their functional smile for a lifetime.

The root canal procedure involves making a tiny hole on the surface of the infected tooth after administering a local anesthetic to numb the pain. Using specialized tools, we clean out the dental pulp and the tooth's nerve. The roots and canals of the tooth are shaped and cleaned to prepare them to receive the filling material.

Then the tooth is disinfected, ensuring that no infected or decayed material is left inside the tooth. Next, we will fill the tooth with a rubber-like material called gutta-percha, which seals the cleaned canals and helps prevent further infection. Finally, we will protect your tooth with a crown to restore its function.

Why should I have an endodontic treatment?

Endodontists are dentists who specialize in performing root canal treatments and other procedures that involve the interior parts of the teeth. Root canal treatments are the most common procedure performed by endodontists, and they rely on their specialized training to diagnose and treat the underlying structural and tissue problems of the teeth. If you're experiencing severe tooth pain that an oral surgeon or general dentist has already diagnosed as a root canal infection, then visiting an endodontist is your next step for relief.

At Kennedy Heights Dental Centre, our highly skilled endodontists will diagnose your condition by performing a thorough oral examination and taking X-rays of your teeth. A root canal is a simple, routine procedure that can relieve your pain and save your tooth. Your endodontist will remove the infected pulp from the interior of your tooth and clean the canals of the roots. If needed, your endodontist will seal the tooth with a crown to protect it from further damage. After the procedure, you should feel no discomfort at all, and our doctors will provide you with post-care kit to help you manage the pain when the anesthesia wears off.

Wisdom Teeth Removal

The wisdom teeth are the last molars to emerge on each upper and lower arch side. Most people don't feel them coming in until they are in their late teens or early twenties. Typically, these molars can erupt through the gum line without causing problems. However, for some, the eruption of wisdom teeth can come with complications. At Kennedy Heights Dental Centre, we offer wisdom teeth removal to avoid any potential complications that can arise when your molar teeth erupt.

Wisdom teeth are the third and final set of molars that erupt between the ages of 17 and 25. Although they're called wisdom teeth, these teeth usually appear much later than the age when most individuals are wise.

Wisdom teeth usually erupt during people's late teens or early 20s. It can be tricky for a dentist to determine when an individual's wisdom teeth will actually emerge because every person's mouth grows differently. Many people simply do not have enough room for their wisdom teeth when they grow, which can cause them to become impacted. Impacted wisdom teeth can cause infections and other oral health complications.

kennady image

What are Impacted Wisdom Teeth?

An impacted wisdom tooth is trapped underneath the gums. It is uncommon for an impacted tooth to ever erupt on its own, which is why surgical intervention is necessary. Hence it is practical to have them removed before they can cause further damage to the neighboring teeth and nerves.

Why Have Wisdom Teeth Removed?

Generally, there is not much room in the mouth for wisdom teeth, causing them to grow sideways or never fully emerge. This is known as impaction and can cause several problems, such as infections, cysts, and damage to other teeth. If not treated promptly, wisdom teeth can lead to expensive surgical or orthodontic treatments that patients can rather avoid.

Here are some of the reasons to have your wisdom teeth removed.

  • Impaction - If your teeth do not grow at the proper angle, they can become impacted. An impacted tooth is one that is unable to break through the gums, causing pain and swelling around the affected area. In some cases, an impacted wisdom tooth can damage neighboring teeth or cause an infection to develop. Removing your wisdom teeth can prevent this issue from occurring. While some people may not have any issues with their third molars, others may experience problems down the line. It is best to extract them early to prevent these issues.
  • Cysts - If your teeth are impacted far below the surface of your gum line, you may develop cysts. These fluid-filled sacs are often painful and cause pressure to build up in the mouth. The tissue around them can become infected as well. It is generally best to extract these teeth right away.
  • Dental Crowding - When your wisdom teeth come in at an improper angle, they may force other teeth to move or become overcrowded. This can result in crooked teeth or a misaligned bite. Removing these teeth can help prevent this from occurring.
  • Gum Disease - When your teeth are crowded, or you have a poor oral hygiene routine, you may be more likely to develop gum disease around adjacent teeth. This makes removing your wisdom teeth all the more important. Without the third molars, you can prevent further complications from developing.

Benefits of Wisdom Teeth Extraction

  • Extracting the wisdom teeth can prevent infections, dental shifting, and damage to adjoining teeth or gum tissue. Future treatment for oral health problems like these can be pretty expensive.
  • The earlier wisdom teeth are removed, the quicker the recovery period. Minor, less-developed molars are easier to extract. Faster healing means less time away from your other activities.
  • There are often fewer complications, such as swelling, bleeding, and discomfort, when wisdom teeth are extracted at a younger age. An easier, quicker, complication-free recovery converts into lower costs for you.

Wisdom Teeth Removal Surgery

After you consult with our dentist, we will take 3D scans of your mouth and discuss your options for anesthesia. In case of extreme anxiety, we offer sedation options to make you comfortable throughout the wisdom tooth removal.

We will begin the surgery by making incisions in the gum tissue to expose the teeth and then remove them using dental tools. Impacted wisdom teeth may need to be broken down into tiny pieces for easier removal. The incision site will be closed with dissolvable stitches to promote speedy healing. Then you will rest until the anesthesia wears off.

Aftercare for Wisdom Teeth Extractions

You should remain on a soft diet for at least three days following the wisdom teeth removal surgery. A regular diet can be gradually introduced after this period. Avoid smoking or using a straw, as this could disturb the blood clot and result in a dry socket.

To learn more about our wisdom tooth extractions, visit our office, Kennedy Heights Dental Centre, at 11960 88 Ave, Delta, BC V4C 3C8, Canada. You can also reach us at 778.200.8556 and schedule an appointment.

If you want a healthy, attractive smile, gum health must be a priority. At Kennedy Heights Dental Centre, we provide gentle, comprehensive periodontal care and evaluate you for any symptoms of periodontal disease and other oral health conditions.

kennady image

Importance of Periodontal Care

As homecare efforts are insufficient, everybody needs regular teeth cleaning in the dental office. Some people are more vulnerable to developing plaque and calculus than others and require more frequent professional cleanings. These cleanings remove the harmful debris accumulated on the teeth and reduce the chances of developing tooth decay. These cleanings also eliminate the bacterial buildup below the gum line to prevent and treat gum disease. If gum disease is left untreated, it advances and harms the bone tissue encircling the tooth roots. This is a reason for tooth loss, discomfort, biting and chewing strength loss, unappealing gum line, bad breath, and inflammation in other body parts.

The oral bacteria that cause gum infections can travel through the bloodstream to other parts of the body. Research has indicated that heart disease, diabetes, and osteoporosis are highly associated with periodontitis and gum infections. Maintaining healthy gums should be a top priority for achieving optimal dental health

What Is Periodontal Disease?

Periodontal disease is an advanced form of gum disease that slowly destroys the teeth and gums. It is caused by bacterial plaque—a sticky film of bacteria that forms on the teeth—which, if not removed, can irritate and inflame the gum tissues. Over time, if left untreated, the bacteria can spread below the gum line causing the gums to separate from the teeth and form spaces called pockets. These small spaces between the teeth and gums make it easier for bacteria and plaque to collect and make it more difficult for the teeth and gums to fight infection. In advanced cases, tooth decay can form within the pockets of the gums and cause tooth loss.

The primary symptoms of periodontal disease are red or swollen gums that may bleed easily; chronic bad breath; sensitive, painful, or loose teeth; and changes in bite alignment. It’s important to note that these symptoms may be signs of other oral health conditions as well, so it’s best to make an appointment with your general dentist to get a proper diagnosis.

Treatment for Periodontal Disease

Treatment for periodontal disease typically involves deep cleaning procedures followed by ongoing maintenance therapy. Deep cleanings are often done under local anesthesia and can typically include scaling, root planing, and polishing. These procedures help to remove harmful bacteria from the surface of the tooth as well as the pocket space between the teeth and gums. The health of your gums and bone structure will also be assessed during a deep clean so that the treatment can be adjusted as needed. Scaling is the careful scraping away of plaque and tartar from the tooth’s surface. Root planing involves smoothing the root surface to prevent future buildup of plaque and tartar. Finally, the tooth is then polished to remove any remaining stains and create a smoother surface that is more resistant to plaque buildup. Follow-up visits will likely be scheduled to monitor the health of your gums and ensure the disease doesn’t reoccur again.

Common Periodontal Diseases & Treatments

Dental Plaque

It is a film of colonizing bacteria attempting to attach to the surface of teeth and feed on the carbohydrates on the teeth. The released acid erodes tooth enamel as the bacteria degrade, causing cavities and tooth decay. It is sensible to reduce sugary drinks and starchy foods and clean teeth immediately after consuming them. It would help to floss once a day and brush after meals and at bedtime to keep the bacteria away.

Calculus or Tartar

They are hardened deposits that form on the teeth, above and below the gum line. Tartar is not easily removed and generally requires removal with special instruments by a dental hygienist.

Gingivitis

The buildup of bacteria in plaque causes inflamed gums that bleed easily. Although gum tissue is inflamed, teeth are still firmly rooted in the surrounding bone, and no irreversible bone or tissue loss has occurred. If gingivitis is not addressed, it can lead to periodontal disease.

Periodontitis

Periodontal disease starts when bacterial toxins in plaque and the body’s defense mechanisms that ward off infections begin to break down the bone and connective tissue that keep teeth in position. It eventually results in deepening gum pockets, loss of jawbone, or even tooth loss. Advanced periodontal diseases can be controlled with deep scaling, root planing treatments, and regular maintenance.

More About Cosmetic Dentistry

Many patients view cosmetic dentistry as an investment in their appearance and overall wellness. Some of the most common procedures include teeth whitening, veneers, crowns, implants, and bridges.

When deciding on whether to undergo cosmetic dental treatments, it's important for patients to consider their own desires for smile improvement and their overall state of oral health. Patients who have healthy teeth and gums may benefit from treatments such as professional teeth whitening or porcelain veneers to revamp their smiles. On the other hand, patients with missing teeth or gum recession may need restorative procedures like dental implants before cosmetic treatments such as porcelain veneers can be performed to enhance the appearance of their smiles.

In certain cases, it's recommended to have both general dentistry treatments and cosmetic treatments performed at the same time. For example, a patient who is getting dental crowns may be encouraged to get his or her teeth whitened beforehand in order to match the newly-restored color to the surrounding natural teeth. This can help ensure that the patient's restored smile appears natural and complements his or her facial features. This type of comprehensive treatment planning is in the best interest of the patient because it helps achieve the best possible results while reducing the overall time commitment required to achieve those results.

Patients can schedule a consultation appointment with our dentist to discuss their treatment options in greater detail and learn more about their candidacy for specific procedures. Patients who are nervous about visiting the dentist should discuss their concerns with their dentist during this consultation visit and determine together what steps can be taken to help them feel more relaxed and comfortable during their appointments.

    Family Dentistry

Family dentistry focuses on taking care of your oral health during every stage of life. Adults, children, and teens have different dental needs. As family dentists at Kennedy Heights Dental Centre, we are experienced at delivering comprehensive oral care to every family member regardless of age or stage in life.

    What is a Family Dentist?

A family dentist is a doctor who provides comprehensive dental care for your entire family. This is someone who provides a range of treatments and procedures, from cleanings and x-rays to fillings and crowns. But more than this, a family dentist is someone that you trust to provide care for you and your loved ones. They get to know you and members of your family as patients, and they gain your trust and confidence over time. This is what makes you and your family feel comfortable in their care.

    Importance of Good Oral Health

Maintaining good oral health is critical for your overall health and life. As family dental care providers, we extend dental services designed to keep your teeth healthy so your facial structure is maintained and you have appropriate oral functions. Your imperfect teeth also affect your smile, and a radiant smile builds self-confidence. In addition, the mouth serves as a window to view the overall health of your body. People who care for their oral cavity are usually more careful about their overall health and well-being.

The mouth breeds lots of bacteria which is normal. Efficient oral health habits like brushing and flossing help keep harmful bacteria under control. When there are inadequate oral hygiene habits, problems can develop. Bacteria combine with sugar present in foods and form acids. These acids can create havoc leading to tooth decay, cavities, and gum disease. When gum disease is left untreated, infections can spread throughout the body, causing various chronic health problems. Regular exams for all family members can help prevent oral problems and be addressed quickly before they cause further issues. Hence regular dental care can be vital for one’s overall health.

Benefits of Having a Family Dentist

A family dentist can help your family members maintain proper oral and overall health. Regular examinations, checkups, and cleanings help treat harmful bacteria and remove tartar and plaque deposits. These preventive measures can help avoid future complications. Each family member has unique dental needs, and we can treat each person according to their individual needs and preferences. Taking all your family members to a single dental provider can save you a lot of time and trouble. Your family dentist sees patients of all ages, which means your children do not have to change dentists as they get older.

Here are several benefits of having a family dentist to care for your family’s smiles:

    • Easier Care Scheduling – Instead of having to schedule multiple appointments with different dentists, the entire family can be seen by one dentist at the same time.
    • Familiarity and Comfort – Everyone knows their own dentist and can feel more comfortable with them compared to someone new.
    • Cost Savings – Having one dentist for the whole family means less money spent on separate expenses.
    • Education – When family members see the same dentist over time, they can learn which treatments are necessary and why they’re beneficial, especially for children. This can help encourage healthy oral hygiene habits in your household.
    • Convenience – When you have only one dentist to see, you don’t have to spend time calling around to different offices or driving from place to place. Instead, you can focus on the health of your loved ones’ smiles and have peace of mind that you’re all being seen by a professional with the experience you need.
    • Timeliness – With regular visits to the dentist, potential problems can be caught early, saving you and your family time and money in the long run.

Preventative Procedures – Dental checkups and cleanings are important for all ages to keep teeth healthy and strong. By seeing the whole family at one time, these preventative procedures can be done quickly and efficiently for everyone at once.
