Ways to Keep Your Smile Healthy This Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving is a time of family, friends, and food. Unfortunately, it's also a time of dental emergencies. With so much going on, it's easy to forget to take good care of your teeth. Here are some ways to keep your teeth healthy during Thanksgiving.

  • Keep up with regular brushing and flossing

Brushing and flossing regularly is the best way to keep your teeth healthy and clean. Since you are gathering with friends and family for a lot of food during the holidays, you should brush after every meal and snack to help remove any extra food particles that may be left behind. This will help prevent any cavities or gum disease from occurring in your mouth.

Use a soft toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste for the best results. Also, don't forget to floss! Flossing at least once a day is important to remove plaque from between teeth and along the gum line.

  • Don't chew on hard foods

It's tempting to bite down on hard, crispy food as you fill your plate with yummy Thanksgiving treats. But be careful! Biting down on a hard object like nuts or candies can crack or damage your teeth.

  • Avoid sticky foods

Sticky and chewy foods like caramel, gummy candy, or highly processed foods like chips can stick to your teeth and can cause damage to them over time. Be sure to eat these foods in moderation at Thanksgiving to avoid damaging your smile.

  • Wear a mouthguard

A teeth-protecting device can also be useful if you're playing a contact sport this holiday. Mouth guards can help protect you from cracked or broken teeth and injuries to the soft tissues of your mouth. Talk to your dentist about if you need a mouth guard and how to find the right one for you.

  • Schedule a dental visit beforehand

If it's been a while since you've visited the dentist, be sure to schedule an appointment as soon as possible. That way, you can schedule your preventative oral care and cleanings to ensure your smile is looking its best during the holidays.

Remember – the best way to protect your oral health is to practice good oral hygiene habits all year long, not just around the holidays! At Kennedy Heights Dental Centre, we strive to provide our patients with a positive and relaxing experience.
