General Info On General Dentistry

Posted by KENNEDY HEIGHTS DENTAL on Jun 27 2022, 09:10 AM

General dentistry focuses on preventing dental problems and supporting oral health. A general dentist provides services that help to prevent dental issues before they happen. In addition, general dentistry helps to improve oral health. These dentists provide dental care to patients of all ages.

What Should I Expect at General Dentistry Appointment?

When you arrive for your appointment, we will have you complete new patient paperwork. Then, we'll check your vital signs, such as your pulse, blood pressure, and temperature, and review your medical history. If you're not feeling well, let us know so we can reschedule your appointment.

Once you're settled into your chair, we'll clean your teeth. We'll also do an oral cancer screening and review your X-rays. We'll then talk with you about your goals for oral health, including your oral hygiene habits and diet. We'll also talk to you about your treatment options.

Types of General Dentistry Treatments

Tooth Extraction

Teeth extractions are sometimes needed for restorative dental work. If a tooth is severely damaged or decayed, tooth extraction may be necessary. In addition, wisdom teeth may need to be extracted, which impacts the alignment of the jaw. Sometimes wisdom teeth are not able to fit properly in the mouth and can push other teeth out of alignment.

Dental Fillings

Dental fillings are the most common general dentistry treatment. Dental fillings can help protect a tooth from further damage or decay. The filling material can restore the chewing surface of a tooth. In some cases, a filling can even help strengthen a tooth.

Root Canal Therapy

A root canal is a dental procedure used to treat an infected or inflamed tooth. The procedure involves removing the infected tissue from the tooth and sealing it to protect it from future damage.

A root canal is necessary when tooth decay reaches the pulp of the tooth, causing pain and sensitivity. The pulp is the soft center within the root of the tooth that contains nerves and blood vessels. When the pulp becomes infected or inflamed, it needs to be removed to stop the pain.

Dental Crowns

A dental crown fits completely over the top of a tooth, completely covering it. The crown is custom-designed for your tooth, so it fits snugly over the top. A dental crown can also be placed over a tooth that has a large filling or is otherwise damaged. The crown protects the tooth and improves its appearance.

Dental Bridges

A dental bridge is a restoration that replaces missing teeth. The restoration consists of crowns placed on the teeth adjacent to the gap and one or more false teeth in between. The false teeth fill in the gap while also holding the restoration securely in place.

Dental Veneers

Dental veneers are thin pieces of durable, tooth-shaped porcelain that are custom-made (for shape and color) by a professional dental laboratory. They are bonded onto the front teeth to create a beautiful and attractive smile.

Dental Implants

An implant is a restoration that replaces a missing tooth. Implants are permanently bonded into the jaw, providing a secure foundation for a replacement tooth. Implants can be used to replace a single missing tooth or multiple missing teeth.
